11. Revision Checklist

Run a draft ending against this list before deciding it is doing its job. Each item corresponds to a test in §7 or a pattern in §8.

The whole-book tests (these require the manuscript, not the last chapter)

• I can trace every element the ending relies on back to an earlier planting, with chapter and page.
• Nothing new and load-bearing arrives for the first time in the ending. (New material is permitted; new load is not.)
• Rereading five earlier scenes with the ending in mind, they read as intentional — or, where they do not, I have decided whether the ending or the scene is wrong.
• The ending answers a pressure the middle of the book built, not only a question it asked.
• A second reading of the book would yield more, not less.

Climax and aftermath

• The book distinguishes its climax from its aftermath, and I can point to where one becomes the other.
• I can say what the aftermath does that the climax could not.
• The aftermath ends at the last decision, not at the last consequence.
• The proportion is a choice I can defend against the historical range, not an accident of stamina.

Domains

• I can name which domains — plot, character, theme, catharsis, final image, form — the ending delivers, which it gestures at, and which it refuses.
• Each domain I claim is delivered has a passage a reader could point to.
• At least one carrier serves more than one domain.
• The distribution matches the book’s mode rather than a default.

Resolution and closure

• Every question the book raised is answered, or visibly declined on the page — none is merely dropped.
• Each thread’s resolution is proportional to the space it occupied.
• Any deliberate ambiguity can be stated in one sentence, and I can say what resolving it would cost.
• The book has ended and not merely stopped: I can name the device that signals it.

Tone and the last page

• The last page and three random middle passages belong to the same book.
• No character and no narrator explains what the book meant.
• The final paragraph does work the paragraph before it does not.
• I know what the last word is, and why it is that one.
• A reader closing the book on this line carries the feeling intended, not only the information.

Deletion

• I have tried ending the book one paragraph, one scene and one chapter earlier, and read what remains.
